In 2005 I made one of the best decisions of my life (I’ve made some more, of course, but this one has been one of the most important ones)
For several reasons which are not worth mentioning here, as I always try to keep only the positive things in life (the negative ones, once they’re solved, I put them into the “Do not open again” drawer), I needed to move from where I had been living, and therefore, I had to start to think about a new place to go. It couldn’t be any place. I didn’t want a temporary home, but somewhere to stay where I would feel comfortable.
So I started looking for places that fulfilled the following requirements:
- It should be well communicated by public transport, as I don’t drive.
- It should be relatively close to Barcelona, where I work every day.
- It should be close to the sea and the beach. I can’t imagine myself living far from the sea (in fact I had to do it for 6 months, and I’ll always remember the suffocating sensation that I had knowing that the sea was so far away).
- It should have the charm of a village but all the facilities and services of a city at the same time.
- And above all, it should have that “je ne sais quoi…” that made me feel that I had found it.
After considering several possibilities, one day, just by chance, someone mentioned Vilanova I la Geltrú, and as it fulfilled the 4 first requirements, I went to find out if it also fulfilled the fifth one.
So I took a train from Barcelona, and after 45 minutes, I reached my destination.
As I was walking along the Rambla Principal, I realized that I liked it, and when I arrived at la Plaça de la Vila (one of the most beautiful squares I’ve ever seen…) I definitely felt the energy I had been looking for…Besides, there were so many people, full of happiness and joy, and they were celebrating something…Later on I got to know that it was the Carnival Saturday! The most important festivity in Vilanova and one of the driving forces of the city.
So I took my phone and called my mother to tell her that I was clear about it and I wanted to live there.
In conclusion, I wasn’t wrong, I feel so happy to be living in Vilanova and besides I feel like if I had always been here.
I want to show you a little sample of what I´m lucky to see on any Sunday in winter.

Invierno en Vilanova i la Geltrú….
En 2005 tomé una de las decisiones más acertadas de mi vida ( he tomado varias, pero esta fue una de las más importantes ). Por circunstancias diversas que no merece la pena escribir aquí, ya que intento siempre quedarme sólo con lo positivo (lo negativo, una vez solucionado lo archivo en el cajón de “ No volver a abrir “), me vi en la necesidad de mudarme de donde estaba viviendo, y por lo tanto empecé a pensar en cual sería mi próximo destino. No me servía cualquiera. No quería un lugar de paso, quería encontrar un lugar donde quedarme, y estar a gusto.
Así que empecé a buscar lugares que cumplieran con los siguientes requisitos:
Debía estar bien comunicado por transporte público, ya que yo no conduzco.
Debía estar relativamente cerca de Barcelona que es donde voy a trabajar cada día
Debía estar muy cerca del mar y la playa. No me imagino viviendo sin el mar cerca ( de hecho tuve que hacerlo durante seis meses, y siempre recordaré esa sensación de asfixia que tenía al saber que el mar estaba tan lejos )
Debía tener el encanto de un pueblo, pero todas las comodidades y servicios de una ciudad
Y sobretodo debía tener aquel “ je ne sais quoi…” que me hiciera sentir que lo había encontrado.
Despues de barajar varias posibilidades, un día totalmente por azar alguien nombró Vilanova i la Geltrú, y como cumplía los 4 primeros requisitos, me fui a averiguar si el quinto también lo cumplía. Así que cogí el tren en Barcelona y a los 45 minutos ya estaba en mi destino. Cuando subí por la Rambla Principal, ya me dí cuenta de que me gustaba, y al llegar a la Plaça de la Vila ( una de las plazas más bonitas en las que he estado…), definitivamente noté la energía que estaba buscando…. Además estaba lleno de gente que rebosaba felicidad y alegría, y estaban en plena celebración de algo…. Más tarde supe que era sábado de Carnaval!!! La fiesta más esperada de Vilanova, y uno de los motores de la ciudad. Desde ahí mismo cogí el teléfono y llamé a mi madre para decirle que ya lo tenía claro y que quería vivir allí.
En fin, que no me equivoqué, que estoy muy feliz de vivir aquí y además me siento como si fuera de aquí de toda la vida.
Os quiero mostrar que ven mis ojos un domingo cualquiera de invierno.
